In 1984, Kurt was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS). ALS is a neurological disorder that causes muscle weakness and paralysis. At first, Kurt didn’t think anything of it since he had played sports all his life without any problems. However, over time the disease progressed rapidly and by 1990 Kurt was wheelchair-bound and unable to speak or eat without help.
Despite his condition, Kurt refused to give up on life. He worked hard to maintain his dignity and continue living independently despite his disabilities. In 2003, after years of hospitalization and rehabilitation work, Kurt finally recovered enough strength to return home from a lengthy stay at an assisted-living facility.
