History of Miami’s Christmas Theme Park
Beginning in 1924, many Miami residents made the trek to Chicago to celebrate Christmas. In response, a group of local businessmen decided to create their own holiday tradition – a Christmas-themed amusement park. The original park was only open for three days – December 22-24 – but it became an annual pilgrimage destination for locals and tourists alike.
In 1975, the park underwent a major expansion and renovation that created its current look. The added attractions included a railroad track that ran throughout the park, as well as decorated buildings and trees. The park also featured an ice skating rink, ski slope, carousel, and Ferris wheel.
Despite its growing popularity, the park faced financial difficulties in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, in 2007, Miami Beach businessman Bruce Ratner acquired the theme park and announced plans to renovate and reopen it as an all-new experience called “Miamiland”. The project has since faced numerous delays, with Ratner recently filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. At this time it is unclear if “Miamiland” will ever be completed.
